✦ Synopsis

Reactions of the hydroxyl radical, OH, with several reactants have been studied near 1200 K in shock tube experiments in which UV absorption was used to monitor the OH concentration. The values of the rate coefficients were found to be 2.7 x lo", 2.6 X lo", 2.8 x and 1.26 x 1013 cm3/mol-s for the reactions of OH with hydrogen, methane, cyclopentane, and isobutane, respectively. These measured values are compared with previous experimental results and transition-state theory calculations.

Concentration-time profiles have been measured for hydroxyl radicals generated by the shock-tube decomposition of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a variety of additives. At temperatures close to 1300"K, the rate constants for the reaction OH + R H + R + HzO arr found to be in the ratio 0.18:0.

Study of n-butane pyrolysis at high temperature in a flow system allows measurement of the sum of the rate constants of the initiation reactions (2) and of the Arrhenius parameters of the reactions Established data for kl/k2 allow estimation of kl for 951'K and this, with recent thermochemical da

The kinetics of the gas-phase dehydrogenation of cyclopentane to cyclopentene is found to be consistent with a slow attack by a n I atom (step 4, text) on cyclopentane in the range 282-382OC. The measured rate constants fit the Xrrhenius equation, log k, = 11.95 f 0.08 -(24.9 f 0.23)/0 1 mole-l sec-

The successive C-H bond dissociation energies of CH,, &Hz. C2H4, and H&O (ketene) are determined using large basis sets and a high level of correlation treatment. For CHI, C2H2, and C2H4 the computed values are in excellent agreement with experiment. Using our results we recommend 107.9 +2.0 and 96.
