✦ Synopsis

In the conventional Bayard-A/pert ion gauge undesirable interactions occur between the gauge and its environment due to fhe pumping action which is inherent in the operation of the gauge, and to the desorption and dissociation of gas by heated components.

These effecfs can be minimized by using an electron multiplier as an ion detector and amplifier, and the necessary small ionizing current can be provided by a cold emitter.

A practical form of gauge having a digital output and providing a linear response to pressure changes over three orders of magnitude is described.
