Cary Cooper will attest that I was reluctant to succeed him as editor. I did not think I was cut out for the job-too much structure and detail for a blue-sky person (I only realized later that is describes Cary too!) Then there's all the responsibility of finding enough good material to publish (i.e., known as ''fear of the white page'' in editorial circles). I already had been on the Academy of Management board at the time its journals dealt with the white-page problem. Ultimately, the notion that editing could be more of a communal activity, if other people became involved too, finally prompted me to say yes. I am grateful to Cary for his unflagging encouragement, to Yitzhak Fried, associate editor during the first years of my tenure, and Carole McCoy, our managing editor, for agreeing to join in building an editorial community. Developing a smart vibrant assembly of consulting editors and board members made all the difference. Looking back, it was a lot of fun. Over the 9 years of my editorship, only a few calls came from Chichester asking where the copy was (though the John Wiley & Sons home office always communicated in proper British English even in times of high emotion
