✦ Synopsis
In some circumstances, the friction of boundary lubricated surfaces can become higher as they become smoother. This effect can be predicted from an elastoplastic model of asperity contact, and the properties of boundary lubricants. In this paper, the model is used to explain the results obtained during the development of a bench test to simulate the scuffing of piston rings in the bores of internal combustion engines. It is proposed that the rapid rise in friction which occurs after running a hot, sparsely lubricated contact for sufficient time is due to a combination of polishing and a modest reduction in the coverage of the rubbing surfaces by the boundary film. It can be well predicted by the model.
