The title of this talk implies that I am going to tell you how a scientist regards bioengineering.

Well, I am, but let it be clearly understood that it is how this scientist looks at bioengineering -and a scientist, at that, who has long ceased to be a 'proper' scientist, and become an administrator.

I shall be expressing my admiration for your field, for its diversity, novelty and youthful ebullience. My remarks will be largely confined to the clinical applications of bioengineering, as this is where my
