A 30:1 scale model technique has been developed for investigating the propagation of noise from traffic on major roads and motorways. Validation studies have been carried out for a range of different road/housing configurations by comparing relative noise lovels obtained using the model with field data obtained specifically for the purpose. This model has been used to obtain systematic prediction data and examples are shown for noise propagating from a road in a natural cut, noise penetration through a gap between adjacent blocks of houses, and containment effects associated with unbroken parallel building fagad~ on opposite sides of the road.
