36 patients with zoster were included in the treatment group and were given ACV intravenously (5 mgikg, every 8 hours) beginning during the first 3 days of illness over a period of 10 days.
The control group included 60 patients with zoster from a dermatological clinic who received no antiviral therapy.
Twenty-three patients from the ACV group and 27 patients from the control group returned for the follow-up examination 6-24 months (mean 15 months) after termination of therapy.
