✦ Synopsis

Miller's approach-avoidance conflict model was discussed in terms of the type of conflict associated with "bad habits" and socially deviant behavior. It was suggested that such conflicts do not conform to the principle of a steeper avoidance gradient. Consequently, it was proposed that the steepness of any gradient varies directly with the temporal contiguity of the behavior and the reinforcement. Data on hospitalized drug addicts were presented which supported this proposed revision in conflict theory.
