In regard to the specific value of the strength loss on sulfate attack, the author and his co-workers (6)* reported 40% loss of compressive strength in 90-day old alite pastes which contained 6% gypsum. It is possible that in the presence of sulfate ions the decrease in the stiffness of C-S-H, which would have a direct influence on the magnitude of expansion, is even greater.
