An espionage novel, based on a 1967 teleplay, adapted from the television script by the original author.

Callan, the most efficient killer in British Intelligence, is brought out of an enforced retirement for one final operation, one which is too dangerous to be left to anyone else. The target is Schneider, a small-time importer, who has his office in the same building. Callan finds they have a lot in common, a shared interest in wargames and military history. As he morosely plans the killing, his section chief, Hunter, keeps moving the goalposts, making the job next to impossible to accomplish. But if he fails, Callan is like to find himself in a red file -- an indication that the subject is marked for execution!
