✦ Synopsis
The early railway companies laid down stringent acceptance requirements for the resistance of railway axles to impact. Suppliers were required to submit axles to speci"ed drop weight tests in the absence, at the time, of any theoretical framework by which the impact resistance could be related to readily assessed materials properties. As a result, an enormous amount of full-scale data was generated but these data seem to have been overlooked in the development of modern theories of dynamic plasticity. One such body of data, carefully accumulated by Andrews, has been re-examined and found to be in remarkably good agreement with the predictions of modern theory.
