A gas-liquid chromatographic (glc) assay for abscisic acid (ABA) is described that is both rapid and highly sensitive. The selectivity and sensitivity of an electroncapture detector are used to reduce the assay procedure to just four steps: extraction, thin-layer chromatography (tic), esterification, and glc. Quantification of the ABA present is by reference to ethyl abscisate added during the assay as an internal standard. The procedure enables samples containing as little as 100 pg of ABA to be assayed.
