✦ Synopsis

WBC cutoff of 5,000/mm 3 had 100% sensitivity and 7% specificity. A cutoff of 10,000/mm 3 was thought to be optimal, with a 92% sensitivity, 43% specificity, and a 5% PPV. Based on the results of this study, the authors recommend that if the examiner wishes to use a CBC as a screening procedure, then blood cultures should be obtained on all children between 3 and 36 months of age with temperatures of 39.0 C or more and WBC of more than 10,000/mm 3.
