β¦ Synopsis
The material-removal process plays an important role in manufacturing industry. A thorough understanding of the complex action in chip formation is essential in order to lead to optimum selection of tools and machining parameters. The paper describes the development of a quick-stop device (QSD) for use on a CNC lathe, that can be set-up conveniently for experimental investigations. Using this device a cut is taken and stopped as quickly as possible so that the observed deformation is close to that while actually machining. The device is based on the shear-pin concept of resisting the cutting forces during normal machining and freezing the cutting action when the shear pin is broken by the impact of a hammer.
