โฆ Synopsis
Objective: This paper gives a brief background on the recent history of Bougainville and the consequences for health services. An outline of a series of mental health workshops is given, together with impressions gained from this experience. The role of a visiting consultant in this unusual situation is described.
Conclusion: Short term consultation and education visits to regions without psychiatrists appear to play some role in support of community leaders during civic reconstruction. Ongoing support from Australia and New Zealand would further assist this process.
