โฆ Synopsis
A series of numerical experiments have been conducted to compare data assimilation schemes based on optimal "suboptimal# estimation and conventional least squares[ Performance of the schemes is demonstrated on extraction of tidal characteristics from data covering a fraction of a day\ a typical and important problem of upper!atmospheric data analysis[ It is shown that the optimal schemes are capable of providing useful estimates of the state of the atmosphere and its evolution for observation con_gurations with relatively large data gaps where the conventional least squares fail[ Sensitivity of the optimal schemes is studied to errors in speci_cation of a priori statistical information[ It is suggested that simultaneous application of schemes with di}erent degrees of dependence on the a priori characteristics may be useful for typical data analysis problems in the upper atmosphere[ ร 0888 Elsevier Science Ltd[ All rights reserved[
