A coumarin-based alkyne was developed as a fluorescent chemodosimeter for the selective detection of mercuric ion. It showed a high selectivity and sensitivity to mercury(II) ion over other metal ions in water.

β¦ Synopsis
The use of sensitive, selective colorimetric reagents incorporated into solid forms sufficiently rugged to be inserted directly into sediments was investigated. This paper describes the preparation of ceramic probes and the reflectance method used for their analysis. Ortho-phenanthroline was impregnated into ceramic rods, or probes. Laboratory evaluation indicates that phenanthroline-impregnated probes can be used for the determination of iron(II) in sediments, but care is needed in storage of exposed probes. 1993 Academic Press.
