✦ Synopsis
The large size, transparency and peculiar dental configuration of leptocephalus larvae can be interpreted as adaptations to a diet of large, transparent and soft food items. It is suggested that gelatinous zooplancton, in particular the discarded house of the Appendicularia or Larvacea, is their main food. Calculations show that an ingestion rate of the order of magnitude 10 houses/ hour is sufficient to sustain an eel larva.
