The recent determination of the detailed conformation of many rinG compounds (1). particularly usiq n.m.r. epectroscouy, raiwa the problem of describing conformations in a text without reference to diagrm. lhie~ leads to the use of rerioua dencriptiona of conformations such aa the well eetablished chair end boat to the more recent half chair, skew, butterfly and, for fire membered ringa, envelope.
