✦ Synopsis
Numerical studies comparing estimation procedurea for variance components in the unbalanced one-way claseification typically assume particular patterns for the group sizes. These studies are complicated by the difficulties of generating patterns that a) adequately 'cover the field' 80 as to provide a baaia for drawing general conclusions and b) reflect a specified degree of imbalance, 80 aa to allow comparisons to be made for 'similar' designs. It is shown that these difficulties may be largely overcome by generating the group sizes from an underlying probability distribution with known characteristics, such as the truncated negative binomial. The proposed methodology is illustrated by an evaluation of the large sample relative efficiencies of the analysis of variance estimators of variance components in the one-way random effects model.
