"When writing about Tibet or Tibetan language in English or any other language than Tibetan, it is desirable to be able to write Tibetan letters in Roman script This book uses such, transcription whenever mentioning Tibetan words in English sentences, whereas examples and exercises are given in Tibetan letters. The transcription used here is an orthographic transcription and not a phonetic transcription Its purpose is thus to depict die correct spelling of a word and not its pronunciation Earlier a variety of transcription systems were in use, but in die early 1960s Turrei Wylie from die University of Washington proposed a standard transcription system to be used by all This system became known as the Wylie Transcription system. This system is preferable as it emphasizes simplicity, since it does not use any unusual signs such as diacritical marks, capital letters, etc., but is still reliable as it does not give room for any ambiguity. Thus, diis is die system used here."
