-When liquid percolates down a packed bed which is mounted on a support having a significant flow resistance, liquid can accumulate at the bottom of the column to form a part-flooded bed, comprising a lower flooded zone and an upper percolating zone. The support plays a major role in the onset of the part-flooded bed and may greatly restrict the flow capacity of the bed. This paper proposes a simplified analysis for the fluid mechanics of a part-flooded bed. The flooded height-flow rate relation is highly curved and depends on the relative importance of the bed and support flow resistances. The variation of the flooded height with flow rate in the absence of entrained air is easily predicted; however, in practice, air is entrapped in the flooded packing, giving a substantially higher packing flow resistance. The amount of entrapped air has been measured for two spherical packings over a range of flow rates. With this data the flooded height-flow rate relation in the presence of entrapped air may be predicted.
