## Abstract On‐line gas chromatography‐combustion‐isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC‐C‐IRMS) is commonly used to measure isotopic ratios at natural abundance as well as for tracer studies in nutritional and medical research. However, high‐precision ^13^C isotopic enrichment can also be measured by

✦ Synopsis
Abstract
^12^C/^13^C ratio is used as natural tracer for the estimation of the mineralizing activity of pelagic bacteria.
Attention is particularly given to the variations of the isotopic ratio of the inorganic carbon produced by the microbial oxidation in comparison with the ratio of the dissolved organic matter.
