✦ Synopsis
It is investigated how far the B e t h e-W e i s z ii c k e r formula for the nuclear binding energies explains the details of the fl-stability if terms are included taking into account the occurrence of nuclear shells. It is found that these bell shaped additions to the binding energy about closed shells should have a height of about 6 MeV at their maximum, in order to explain the fl-stability characteristics of the nuclei.
