โœฆ Synopsis

A preface from the new editors 1990 marks the ten year anniversary of Cancer and Metastasis Reviews. As such, it is fitting to celebrate this anniversary by announcing certain changes to the journal and paying tribute to its founding editors, Dr. Isaiah ("Josh") Fidler and Dr. George Poste. The journal's roots lie in the renaissance in metastasis research which began in the mid 1970s and which has continued unabated ever since. It was the founding editors' opinion that the mechanisms by which malignant cells metastasize and the clinical interventions in this process were among the most challenging and important goals facing cancer researchers and clinical oncologists alike. This is still true today. A major objective of Cancer and Metastasis Reviews has been to highlight advances in metastasis research and treatment, and to identify interesting or emerging new directions. The joumal has been successful in fulfilling these goals, an achievement that reflects the foresight, guidance, and energy of Josh Fidler and George Poste. To them we express our sincere thanks and gratitude.

As the new Editors-in-Chief of Cancer and Metastasis Reviews we will continue to highlight important developments and novel trends in cancer research and clinical oncology -with emphasis on metastasis and malignancy. To help achieve this goal we have established a new Editorial Advisory Board. Its members will be called upon to suggest potential topics and contributors.

A major departure from the established format is the introduction of a "theme" approach. For example, this issue embraces the theme of "The Endothelial Cell and Angiogenic Growth Factors in Cancer Growth and Metastasis," while the next will be devoted to "Proteases in Cancer Cell Growth and Invasion." Each issue will contain five to seven articles selected by the Editors-in-Chief with the help of certain Editorial Advisory Board members. In addition a preface to each volume will be solicited from a distinguished investigator or clinician. We hope this will help provide an opportunity for authoritative editorial comments on the origin of the field, its current status, and future directions. As in the past, reports published in Cancer and Metastasis Reviews are not necessarily intended to be extensive reviews of the literature, but instead will focus upon specific topics. Authors are encouraged to write about their own work, to stress their personal views, and to speculate on future directions. We are confident that these guidelines, in combination with the new format, will make for stimulating and informative reading in the field of cancer and metastasis, and look forward to the appearance of many excellent future issues.
