A rolling punch planter with a cam-actuated opening mechanism was developed to plant maize (and other similarly sized grains) in tilled and untilled soils. Field tests showed that satisfactory planting of the seeds was achieved in an untilled field with up to 75~ residue cover (at about 5500 kg/ha).
