β¦ Synopsis
In this paper, a precise clock synchronization method using ISDN is proposed. Time period measurement and time offset measurement are necessary for clock synchronization. Our method measures time periods using a framing clock signal. Time offset measurement is accomplished by directly connecting the computers with an ISDN circuit switch, acquiring the timestamp of the time offset measurement packets via hardware components, and synchronizing the phase of a clock signal for time period measurement and termination timing of the transmission and reception of time offset measurement packets. Implementation and evaluation showed that the error inherent in time offset measurement is mainly caused by the difference in the round-trip delay times of time offset measurement packets. The range of variation of the error can be decreased by estimating the confidence interval of the error from the statistical properties of the error caused by the difference of round-trip delay times.
