Plant Drug Analysis" is a thin-layer chromatograph atlas of industrial plant drug preparations containing 170 color photographs of TLC chromatograms. It has been translated into English from the German edition "Drogenanalyse." The emphasis is on commercial European drugs.
The book is organized into sections on crude drug types including essential oils, alkaloids, anthracene derivatives, arbutin, bitter principles, coumarins, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, saponins. pungent principles, mustard oil and allium, narcotics, valepotriates, pigments, and miscellaneous constituents. Each section has a detailed description of the extraction process and TLC systems, a list of drugs in each section, chemical formula, and then color photographs of the TLC chromatograms. In addition, there is a section on methods for screening an unknown commercial drug and TLC analyses of herbal drug mixtures. A complete list of all spray reagents used and appropriate references are included.
