โฆ Synopsis
A polyphenolic complex (PC) with antiviral activity has been isolated from the Bulgarian medicinal plant Geranium sanguineurn L. Its antiviral activity was studied with respect to the effect of the substance on the expression of influenza virus proteins on infected cell surface. ELISA with monoclonal antibodies to haemagglutinin, neuraminidase and nucleoprotein was used. By studying various strains of human, avian and equine influenza viruses it was shown that the inhibitory effect was strain-related, and consistent with a selective antiviral action. The effect depended also on the dose of PC and the virus inoculum.
