โฆ Synopsis
The quasi-static lateral indentation of tubes supported continuously along their base and fully restrained at each end is modelled using the finite element method. Comparisons are made between numerical results and some previously published methods of describing the load-deflection behaviour of tubes under this load case. A parametric study considering the influence of wall thickness, tube length, diameter and yield stress is described and an equation for predicting the permanent dent depth for a given load is derived.
