✦ Synopsis

Numerical comparisons are carried out by the most prominent methods, both second and higher order, for solving secular equations. These equations arise in several matrix problems and numerical linear algebra applications. In addition to the comparisons, we propose a new starting point. Our results show a clear advantage to higher-order methods.
