Abstract

A numerical analysis for the assessment of wrinkle formation tendencies in sheet metals is presented. A doubly‐curved thin shell element under biaxial plane stress states is considered, and the critical stress values for wrinkling are determined. The analysis is based on plastic bifurcation theory for the buckling of thin shells in short‐wavelength shallow modes. The effects of the various material and geometric parameters on wrinkling are investigated.

## Abstract A simplified scheme for considering the thickness stress of shell elements induced by contact is presented which improves the accuracy of sheet metal forming analysis. The yield function formulated on the basis of plane stress conditions is modified to incorporate the effect of transver
