✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The outer orifice of the funnel‐shaped pores in the eggshell of the mallee fowl, Leipoa ocellata, contain irregularly shaped pieces of crystalline material. The whole of the outer surface of the shell is covered with spheres containing amorphous calcium phosphate but little organic material. Thus they would not be expected to support microbial growth and they would not be corroded by organic acids produced by microorganisms in the incubation mounds.
