✦ Synopsis
Abstract
The 3G IMT‐2000 is intended to be a global standard offering higher bit‐rate service comparable to current wireline services. This paper investigates a novel internal square patch antenna for the application of the 3G IMT‐2000 mobile handsets. By introducing a single shorting pin and a thin rectangular slot perforated in a square patch of 34 mm×34 mm, this probe‐fed antenna will realize an impedance bandwidth (return loss <−10 dB) of 25.6% with dual‐frequency operation, which thoroughly covers the 3G IMT‐2000 frequency spectra from 1885 to 2200 MHz. The antenna design and its typical characteristics, such as the impedance behavior and the far‐field radiation patterns, are presented and analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The measured and simulated results are in good agreement. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 31: 488–491, 2001.
