Abstract

A novel method suitable for the synthesis of the cobalt oxide (Co~3~O~4~) nanowires at targeted regions is presented in this report. Cobalt (Co) nanobowls synthesized by colloidal crystal directed assembly were transformed into Co~3~O~4~ nanowires by a simple heat treatment process. Co nanobowls exhibited a two phase (h.c.p.โ€‰+โ€‰f.c.c.) microstructure while single phase microstructure was observed for Co~3~O~4~ nanowires. Ferromagnetic Co nanobowls showed a dependence of coercivity on bowl size while Co~3~O~4~ exhibited weak ferromagnetic behavior.
