โœฆ Synopsis

A novel approach is presented toward the exact generation of the characteristic equation in free system vibrations, starting from the homogeneous Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. While existing procedures are cumbersome to evaluate, the present process is quite amenable to rapid numerical estimates, since it is iterative in character. Unlike other iterative procedures, the convergence of the present scheme is warranted for all values of 2. The easy evaluation of the characteristic equation becomes particularly important when considering the response of complex systems to non-periodic forces.

This analysis extends the results of a previous paper by H. C. Lee (1) in which a generalized minimum principle is applied to a wedge. Similar results are obtained by the use of integral equations. Two types of integral equations are shown, one in a pair of equations and the other in a single equati
