✦ Synopsis
Abstract
A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG)‐based chirp‐coded en/decoder is proposed for a coherent two‐dimensional (2D) time‐spreading wavelength‐hopping optical code‐division multiple‐access system. Combined with reconstruction‐equivalent‐chirp technology, the proposed coder can be easily realized in a single FBG with a conventional fabrication setup. Compared with other 2D encoders, the chirp‐coded encoders are expected to provide enhanced security, increased power efficiency, expanded code cardinality, and reduced coherent beat noise. Experimental results of such en/decoders and the corresponding system test‐bed at a data rate of 5 Gb/s verify the feasibility. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
