A novel architecture for enhanced security through virtualisation and spoofing

"Everyone thinks it's a good idea to be able to make free phone calls from anywhere but, in effect, it's a darknet service. Skype is a peer-to-peer network, data is encrypted although not anonymised, and you can't contact someone unless you know their address," he says.

"The technology is neutral but it can be used for good or bad"

Therefore, permitting its use means that organisations are opening up their firewalls with no way of monitoring to what end people are employing the service. "If I were a corporate spy and wanted to send information out, there'd be no way of telling what I was doing," Wood explains.

But he also acknowledges that such issues have been a matter of debate since technology -in all its many forms -was first invented. "It's like Oppenheimer splitting the atom," says Wood. "The technology is neutral but it can be used for good or bad.
