The carbohydrate-derived lactone phenylsemicarbazones 3 and 4 were prepared from 5 and 8 (Scheme). Treatment with 4-phenylsemicarbazide gave 6 and 7 (77:23) and 9 and 10 (76:24), respectively. Oxidation of 6 and 9 by Cr0,-pyridine to 11 and 13, followed by deprotection, yielded 3 and 4. The structur
