Abstract

The equations of motion in curvilinear coordinates, in which the curvature of the earth is taken into account, are shown to be quite simple when the coordinate system is a particular one, closely related to the stereographic map projection. As an illustration of the use of these coordinates, derivations are given of the vorticity equation and of Ertel's Theorem.
