While the lymphatic vessels draining the anus and rectum have been studied and described from time to time, mostly by French and German anatomists, there are a few controversial points remaining. From the point o f view of the clinician some of these points have become increasingly important in recent years. This is partly because of the role of the lymphatics in the dissemination of carcinoma of the rectimi, aiid partly because of the present trends in surgery toward more frequent preservation of the sphincter mechanism.

For these reasons it mas felt that additional work leading either toward a confirmation of the existing descriptions o r toward some additional information would be desirable.

An analysis is presented of 2313 histologically proven cases of carcinoma of the colon and rectum at Charity Hospital from January 1, 1948 through December 31, 1970. For the 2010 cases diagnosed prior to January 1, 1968, so that 5-year followup was possible, survival curves based upon several parame
