โฆ Synopsis
A low-frequency approximation for the diffraction of a straight-crested gravity wave of wave number k by a fixed plate of area S on the surface of water of uniform depth is constructed for k 2 S 1. The resulting scattering width (the counterpart of the scattering cross-section in classical diffraction theory), to which the scattered power is proportional, is Q = 1 4 k 3 S 2 (c/c g ) 2 , where c and c g are the phase and group velocities of the wave.
