✦ Synopsis
A comparison is drawn between some of the elements most widely employed to model the tip region in elasto-plastic fracture mechanics: i.e. standard 6-node elements, 6-node quarterpoint elements, 8-node collapsed elements, I-node quarter-point collapsed elements. The discussion is particularly focused on the representation of the strain field within the element, the sensitivity of the element to the position of the opposite node to the tip and its ability to satisfy the incompressibility condition.
