✦ Synopsis

This paper treats of the effect of space differentiation upon wave functions, describing the diffraction by infinitely thin plane screens. As already indicated by L o r d R a y 1 e i g h, certain singularities will then occur at the sharp edge of the diffracting screen. This principle is demonstrated explicitly in case of S o m m e r f e 1 d's well-known solution of electromagnetic diffraction by a semi plane. Furthermore it is briefly indicated why M 6 g 1 i c h's solution of the three-dimensional diffraction by a circular screen is erroneous.
