โฆ Synopsis
WITH RFSPEC'T to the relation between the energy release rate and the stress intensity factors in non-coplanar crack extension under mixed mode loading, we published papers previously [l, 2,3]. The purpose of these papers was to dissolve the confusion in this subject and thus to reach correct understanding. Our conclusion obtained through these papers was confirmed by Kageyama and Okamura~4]. Recently M. H. Wang[S] revived this subject and argued against our conclusion. The purpose of this note is to examine if his view is correct.
Consider non-coplanar crack extension (initiation of an infinitesimal kink) as shown in Fig. 1. Let G be the energy release rate in this process. When WC published the above papers, three different equations for G existed. These were In these equations. K and ir have the usual meanings. kT,,, R,,, and Run, are the stress intensity factors at the tip B of the infinitesimally kinked crack AOB. Ict,, E;,,, and fit,,, are kinds of stress intensity factors defined as

The strain energy criterion for crack propagation proposed in the paper is based on the principle that the direction of crack propagation takes place along the direction where the distance from the crack tip to a certain contour line of constant distortional strain energy density is minimum, and the
