✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Angular momentum transports due to mean meridional circulations and horizontal exchange processes are computed for a theoretical model. It is found that, in high latitudes, the transport due to mean meridional circulations is less than 1 per cent of that due to horizontal exchange processes. In the tropics, however, the transport due to mean meridional circulations is seen to dominate that due to horizontal exchange processes. It is suggested that a variable coefficient of eddy viscosity would have to be used in order to explain observed motions on a synoptic scale.

## Abstract Numerical experiments with a two‐level, quasi‐geostrophic model, described by Davies and Davies (1969), have been extended in several ways; the grid spacing of the previous model has been halved, greatly reducing numerical errors, and the lateral East‐West span of the flow domain is muc
