✦ Synopsis
The authors of Reference 1 give an algorithm for a two-step renumbering of the nodes of a finite element model. Instead of numbering the nodes directly, a connectivity graph of the finite element model is constructed, and its nodes numbered using the Cuthill-McKee algorithm. The nodes of each element are then sequentially ordered using the Cuthill-McKee algorithm to obtain the nodal numbering of the model. The method is simple and efficient and has been used successfully by the present writer for nodal numbering of finite element models.' The connectivity graph has also been employed for ordering the elements of a cycle basis for the flexibility analysis of skeletal structure^.^'^ However, the method in Reference 2 has some
