β¦ Synopsis
We present a generalisation of response theory to the non-linear regime of the interaction of an electromagnetic field with an extended system of two-level atoms. The different propagators together with the equations for the fields with their interdependence are presented. The optical extinction theorem is further generalised. The formulated theory is utilised later to derive the dispersion relations relevant to the non-linear effect of optical multistability.
