✦ Synopsis
During an investigation of the freshwater algae of Newborough Warren dune system of Anglesey, North Wales, Great Britain, a diatom has been observed which appears to be a new variety of Nitzschia sinuata (W . SM.) GRUN . The nomenclature of N. sinuata var . denticuloides var . n. has been suggested because of its apparent resemblance in size and shape with the frustule of N. Denticula GRUN.
Diagnostic description : Frustule fusiform with slightly produced and capitate ends ; 10-22 ,u long, 3-4 a broad ; carinal canal eccentric ; costa 6-8 in 10 u ; striae 22-32 in 10 ,u being very delicate and almost indistinguishable (Fig. 1) .
Latin diagnosis : Valvis fusiformibus, polis subproductis et subcapitatis, longis 10-22 ,u, latis 3-4 ,u, carina excentrica, costis validis 6-8 in 10 ,u, striis delicatissimis vix visibilis 22-32 in 10 ,u .
The type N. sinuata (W . SM .) GRUN ., also described as var . tumida (HANTZ .) A. CL.-EUL., (CLEVE-EULER, 1952), together with N. sinuata, var . tabellaria GRUN . are the two taxa known ; they both have a minimum size range of 15 µ long and 5 u broad. They occur in Newborough Warren dune area and have already been reported by WOODHEAD & TWEED (1954). The new variety is much smaller in size thereby fitting in the lower size range of Nitzschia Denticula GRUN . but the morphological nature of the costa indicates its affinity to N . sinuata (W. SM .) GRUN .
