The competition between superconductivity (SC) and magnetic order in the Cu02 planes of (La, \_=Gd,)2\_,Sr,Cu,\_,M,04, M =Fe, Zn, Ga and Ni was studied by magnetometry and 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy. In the superconducting (x= 0.15-0.2) samples substitution of La by Gd or Cu by Fe causes SC to dis

โฆ Synopsis
The synthesis and structural characterization of a new type of homologous series of lanthanum cuprates, with the general formula La4+4nCu8+2n014+8nr is reported. Tlfe n = 2 and n = 3 members, La2Cu20, and La&u , 19, synthesized in bulk, are stable 0 over very narrow temperature ranges in air and oxygen. Higher members (n > 3 ) have been observed by electron microscopy. The crystal structure of La2CuZ05 consists of thin slabs of LaaCuO~ sandwiched between CuO planes of complex low-dimensional geometry. The temperature dependent magnetic susceptibilities of LaZCu205 and La8Cu,01s are characteristic of low-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets with a remarkably low exchange coupling energy.
